The IPB was founded in 1891, as a result of consultations at the Universal Peace Congresses, large gatherings held annually to bring together the national peace societies that had gradually developed, mainly in Europe and North America, from the end of the Napoleonic Wars onwards.

In the inter-war period IPB struggled to get its voice heard but was gradually drowned out in the rising tide of nationalism. Secretary-General since 1911, Henri Golay was able to keep the Bureau functioning until the outbreak of war in 1939. His death in 1950 marked the end of the old IPB, but a new one was in the process of being born. After many organisational complications the International Liaison Committee of Organisations for Peace (ILCOP), which had inherited the assets of the old IPB, was renamed IPB in 1964 and ILCOP became a small private foundation.

IPB’s membership remained low in the 60s and 70s, but rose sharply after the merger with the International Confederation for Disarmament and Peace in 1984. In 1963 there were 17 member organisations. There are now 186.

The first President of the new IPB was Ernst Wolf (1963-1974) who was the mastermind behind the merger and the establishment of the ILCOP foundation. He was succeeded in 1974 by Sean MacBride, who continued until 1985, giving way to Bruce Kent of British CND.
Currently, the IPB has two co-presidents: Ingeborg Breines and Reiner Braun.

Notice sur le fonds documentaire Jean-Luc Maurer donné aux archives et à la bibliothèque de l’IHEID

Professeur honoraire en études de développement à l’IHEID depuis sa retraite académique en 2012, Jean-Luc Maurer, qui fut notamment directeur de l’IUED de 1992 à 2004 et président de l’EADI de 2005 à 2011, a fait don en 2022 à la bibliothèque de l’Institut d’environ 2000 ouvrages en sciences sociales portant principalement sur la région Asie-Pacifique et plus particulièrement sur les pays d’Asie du Sud-Est et sur l’Indonésie, dont il est un spécialiste reconnu, ainsi que d’un important fonds documentaire constitué de notes de cours et de recherche ainsi que de divers autres documents. Ce fonds comprend notamment une majeure partie des résultats du travail d’enquête effectué dans les 12 villages indonésiens sur lesquels il a travaillé dans les années 70 pour sa thèse de doctorat à l’IUHEI défendue en 1983 sous le titre de Modernisation agricole, développement économique et changement social. Le riz, la terre et l’homme à Java. On y trouve aussi une partie du matériel de recherche collecté pour la rédaction d’un autre de ses principaux ouvrages, publié en 2006, intitulé Les Javanais du Caillou : des affres de l’exil aux aléas de l’intégration, Sociologie historique de la communauté indonésienne de Nouvelle-Calédonie. Enfin, on peut aussi y consulter un certain nombre de documents relatifs à son dernier ouvrage majeur publié en 2021 intitulé Indonésie : l’envol mouvementé du Garuda. Développement, dictature et démocratie. Par ailleurs, une sélection des notes des principaux cours qu’il a donné à l’IUED et à l’IHEID tout au long de sa carrière d’enseignant, de 1975 à 2012, sur des thèmes aussi divers que le développement économique, social et politique de l’Asie du Sud-Est, le développement rural et agricole, les société rizicoles, la coopération au développement, le « miracle » de l’Asie orientale et, dans les dernières années, sur les problèmes de mondialisation et d’inégalités croissantes a également été constituée, en espérant que tout ce matériel sera utile pour les chercheurs qui travailleront sur l’histoire des instituts cousins IUHEI et IUED qui ont fusionné en 2008 pour former l’IHEID.

Alain Monnier (1950-2009) était un ethnologue genevois. Après une formation classique, il élargit son champs d’étude de la mythologie grecque vers les mythes de civilisations plus lointaines, en particulier d’Amérique du Sud et d’Océanie. Il effectue plusieurs voyages de recherche en Papouasie et en Amazonie. Il enseigne pendant de nombreuses années l’anthropologie religieuse à l’Université de Genève et participe également à plusieurs expositions du Musée d’ethnographie de la ville. C’est également un passionné de cuisine et de jazz.

Ses archives, comportant une bibliothèque, des papiers personnels et des supports audiovisuels, ont été données par son épouse, Isabelle Anex Monnier, à la Bibliothèque en 2011. Elles reflètent les nombreux centres d’intérêt du chercheur et témoignent de son ouverture d’esprit et de sa grande curiosité intellectuelle.

La Bibliothèque compte environ 2000 volumes. Plus de la moitié des titres concerne les thèmes de recherche de l’ethnologue qu’étaient les civilisations autochtones américaines et des îles du Pacifique. A côté des publications scientifiques, la bibliothèque contient aussi de la littérature grise, des livres anciens de la seconde moitié du 19e siècle, des romans populaires, des bandes dessinées et des livres de cuisine. Parmi les langues représentées, on trouve diverses langues européennes (français, anglais, espagnol, hollandais, allemand, portugais), ainsi que des langues indonésiennes (kâté, batak, …) ou sud-américaines (quechua, aymara, pilagá, guajiro, tarahumara, matsiguenga, …).

Les documents des archives à proprement parler permettent de retracer les activités d’enseignement et de recherche sur le terrain, ainsi que différents projets de publications ou d’expositions menés par le chercheur. Les archives contiennent ainsi l’ensemble des cours donnés à l’Université, le matériel de terrain (questionnaires, enregistrements, photographies, carnets,…), les données de recherche (vocabulaire, recueil …) et les textes de nombreuses conférences données en Suisse et à l’étranger, aussi bien dans des universités que dans des lieux de culture alternative. Parmi les différents projets de l’ethnologue, on peut citer ses efforts pour mieux faire connaître la culture batak de Sumatra (publication d’un manuscrit inédit, bande dessinée en batak) et les ébauches d’un livre de cuisine. Une petite collection d’affiches de concert et de coupures de presse témoigne enfin de la carrière de saxophoniste d’Alain Monnier.

Before and after the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, and with ongoing civil wars in Burundi and DRC, a great amount of written documents were produced in the Great African Lakes region, but without any record or storage. The International Documentation Network on the Great African Lakes Region was born in 1994, at the initiative of Africanist scholars who were willing to keep track of, and make public, unpublished documents about this troubled part of Africa – so-called "grey literature", i.e. texts from local NGOs, political parties, researchers, scholars, local press, individuals etc., most of them produced between 1990 and 2000.

The Programme started to collect original documents in the field and at the institutional level, resulting in a total of about 4,000 documents.

Hosted in Geneva from 1995 to 2009 by the former Graduate Institute for Development Studies, the Programme opened local offices in the field, i.e. in Burundi, Rwanda, DRC and Tanzania. It was offering a double opportunity: to collect more documents from the concerned countries, and to train local staff to document processing with the highest efficiency. The Programme stopped its activities in March 2009.
